HFHC TRAVEL IMMERSION PROGRAMS
Honduras is a small, often forgotten, third world country located in the mountains of Central America. Over 70% of the population is under 18 and the greater majority lives in unspeakable poverty. There are very few roads, bridges or government programs, inadequate healthcare and little chance of an education. Hunger, poverty and unemployment are the norm.
The Hope for Honduran Children Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to help provide a nurturing environment for children ravaged by conditions of extreme poverty. In addition to supporting them with food, clothing, shelter, medical care and education, our ultimate goal is to instill the desire and provide the necessary tools for these children to become self-sufficient, caring, and responsible adults. HFHC offers a variety of volunteer programs each providing opportunities for unique experiences abroad. Each program is solidly based on the principles of service, education, cultural exchange, and reflection. The volunteer programs and camps are found to be life - changing journeys. As we make meaningful contributions to the community and deep bonds of friendship with the children, our lives become enormously enriched. The scope of our work depends on the number of people within the group and the needs of the village. The trips are usually one week in duration and welcome people of all skill sets, physical stamina, ages, religions, and language capabilities. Costs vary according to the number of participants on each trip. We encourage volunteers to apply as far in advance as possible.

Support and security by representatives of HFHC in Honduras

International Community Service Programs
The Hope for Honduran Children Foundation works to support the programs of Sociedad Amigos de Los Niños and offers travel programs to visit and work with the children of living in the rural communities of Nuevo Paraiso and Flor Azul. Eighty two year old Maria Rosa Leggol founded Sociedad Amigos de los Niños and has rescued over 40,000 children. Often called the “Mother Teresa of Central America”, she struggles to provide food, clothing, shelter, education and protection for abused and neglected children. Our volunteer programs are designed to make a difference in the lives of the children of Honduras, the local communities of Nuevo Paraiso and Flor Azul, as well as the lives of our volunteers. Volunteers focus on light construction projects, teaching English, sharing special skill sets, playing games, and organizing arts & crafts projects.
International Enterprise Program
The mission of our Enterprise Program is to create an international network of academic and professional resources to strengthen third world villages with new economic development opportunities. Students and professionals are encouraged to work as a team in developing sustainable solutions that will help change the face of poverty, end hunger and provide education and training. To date we have built a mini market, a cyber café, a coffee business and a tilapia farm. The Enterprise Program creates a variety of learning opportunities for students in which they will come to understand the need to act as ethical leaders and responsible citizens in a global community. Students and professionals are expected to integrate their academic interests with service work. They are encouraged to “take charge” of planning and growing small sustainable enterprises, to help raise seed capital, to share their vision, new ideas and technical and business expertise as well as assist with pre-trip planning.
International Education Service Program
The mission of our Education Service Program is to empower students and professionals to work as a team in providing much needed education and materials. Children living in remote rural communities desperately lack the opportunity of an adequate education or the exposure to new ideas. Each member of the team brings a specific skill they are willing to share – academics (math, English, geography), health, art, music, chess, sewing, embroidery, crafts, etc. Volunteers may act as independent teachers or assistants, depending on their comfort level.
Ten Day Cultural Exchange & Service Camp
Includes several travel days with visits to the Mayan region of Copan, a coffee plantation, and possibly a Garifuna village and beach. Time is also in spent building a project, learning to make salsa, cook tortillas and enchiladas and building relationships with the children of Flor Azul and Nuevo Paraiso.
Ten Day Community Service & Spanish Language Camp
Following our “learning by doing” approach to education, participants spend ten days at Nuevo Paraiso and nearby Flor Azul building a project, teaching the children, building relationships and spending time each day in learning the Spanish language.
